Like many people, Nikki heard about the Bowen Technique through word of mouth. She suffered with a repetitive strain injury in her arm for several years and tried various treatments, but nothing lasted.
A friend recommended a Bowen therapy practitioner in Somerset and after just 3 sessions, the pain in her arm had all but gone. The treatment felt very subtle but had a transforming effect, not only on the area of pain but on the body as a whole. This experience inspired her to become a qualified practitioner.
Nikki originally trained as a Social Worker and has worked in the fields of Child Protection, Adults with Learning Disabilities and Counselling. She moved into teaching and then public library work for a few years and is now very excited to be providing an essential healthcare service.
Bowen therapy is an holistic hands-on technique which was developed in Australia. It may be used to help with muscle pain; joint pain; repetitive strain injuries often experienced by musicians, gardeners, computer users, sports people. Bowen therapy may also help with internal conditions such as respiratory problems, digestive ailments, migraines, stress and more.
It consists of a series of gentle moves over muscles, ligaments, tendons, nerves and connective tissue (fascia) which send signals via your nervous system to the brain. The brain’s response is to activate the ‘rest and repair’ mode, which calms the body, takes it out of ‘fight or flight mode’ and so helps to reduce inflammation and allow the body to start the healing process.
It can be performed on skin or through light clothing, with the client lying on a treatment couch, covered in a large towel/blanket. It is also possible to be treated seated. In order to facilitate complete relaxation, the therapist leaves the room or sits quietly to one side after each set of moves, to allow the client’s body to integrate the work. Bowen can have an immediate effect on some conditions but a series of 2-3 sessions usually has a longer lasting effect.
An initial Bowen session lasts about 1 hour and a half. In this session, we take a comprehensive health history and discuss your current symptoms. Follow on sessions last between 45 minutes and 1 hour. The first Bowen session is £30 per session, follow on sessions £25. Payment is made by cash or cheque.
